J&D’s/The Oatmeal Sriracha Popcorn

Posted by & filed under , .

As we mentioned before, HamDog and I are true to the Sriracha Rooster Sauce and have been for quite some time. It’s awesome that The Oatmeal’s Matt Inman has taken it upon himself to tell everyone about the glory that is Sriracha chili sauce… and everyone certainly needs to know about it. This dude writes some pretty funny comics and has a hell of a following, and he’s teamed up with J&D’s to make Sriracha Popcorn.

Well folks, this bag of popcorn is pretty fuckin’ rad. Although, I can honestly say I don’t taste “Sriracha popcorn” which was a little bit of a disappointment. The burn is there, but it’s not quite up to snuff with the actual taste of Sriracha… and I should know exactly what it tastes like because I’ve had too many drunken nights where I grew the cojones to squirt large amounts of Sriracha directly from the bottle and into my mouth. I think the kicker here is that it doesn’t have enough garlic taste to it… which is kind of the staple to Sriracha. Honestly, it just tastes like a better version of cajuncorn*. But that’s not to say that this popcorn isn’t flavorful… it really is! It’s got a great chili pepper flavor, and every few bites you taste a kind of sweetness to it. Now, in J&D’s/The Oatmeal’s defense… I’m sure it’s pretty difficult creating you own Sriracha popcorn-powder that’s spot on. Plus one is a spice blend and the other is a squirtable liquid, so it’ll never be exact. While I personally think that this popcorn falls short of the “Sriracha” title, it’s still a great spicy snack.

But the main reason you should buy this stuff is to support Matt Inman and his creative endeavors. The guy raised enough money to buy a goddamn Tesla Museum for crying out loud. Plus he writes funny shit about cats and correcting Jerry Falwell’s poor use of grammar. While it may not be spot-on Sriracha flavored, it’s still delicious.

*”PotC… what the fuck are you wanting to footnote here, bro?” you’re probably asking. Well, cajuncorn has been a staple in my household for many years. While you should still buy at least 1 bag of Sriracha Popcorn, here’s a recipe to make your own hot and kick ass popcorn at home:

Crazy Jay’s Cajuncorn

- 2 qts popcorn, popped
- 1/4 cup melted butter~
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 – 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper~
- 1 tsp lemon pepper

Pop the goddamn popcorn (I really shouldn’t have to tell you this). Anyhoo, you can either put the popcorn in a bag, pour the melted butter over it, shake, pour the spice mixture in, and shake again OR you can mix the spices in with the melted butter and then pour that on the bag of popcorn and shake. Either way works rather well. You can always up the butter if you like Butter Annihilation Style popcorn, or put in more cayenne for more heat. Hell, squirt some Sriracha in the melted butter for even MORE kick. Mix this recipe up as you please (I usually don’t follow it the same way every time) for a nice spicy popcorn snack.
