Buc-ee’s Beaver Nuggets

Buc-ee's beaver nuggetsOne of the most miserable and terrible times in you might have to experience in your lifetime is driving hundreds of miles across the state of Texas.  I-10, the unforgiving interstate that stretches across the US, is pretty awful overall.  But specifically starting at the Texas/Louisiana border stretching all the way to the other side of Texas in the El Paso area is about 1000 miles.  1000 miles of absolutely nothing. If you ever find yourself in this situation, you’ll probably contemplate shoving Sriracha infused toothpicks into your eyeballs.  But before you do that, keep an eye out for a Buc-ee’s. You’ll see a ridiculous looking beaver on a billboard with captions that say something like, “OMG A BEAVER LOL”, and you should make note of that exit number. Buc-ee’s is a Texas chain of convenience stores that can best be described as the Wal-Mart of truck stops.  They have anything a regular convenience store would have and then some.  Deli, fresh food, restaurants, they sell jars of pickled vegetables and all sorts of crazy shit.  One of their claims to fame are the Beaver Nuggets.  I never ever pass up a Buc-ee’s for this reason.  Grab a 13oz bag of these bad boys and a bottle of root beer and go at it.  The way I normally describe them is a sweet snack that has the caramel/maple/toffee flavor that you would get from something like Cracker Jacks or Fiddle Faddle, which is coated on a small nugget that has the texture of Cheeto puffs.  Remember, this is the only good thing about driving through Texas so you HAVE to make the stop.  If you still feel the need to shove tooth picks in your eyeballs, you should at least do it after you polish off a bag of Beaver Nuggets but before you get to New Mexico (or Louisiana if you’re driving the other way).buc-ee's billboard

Cosmos Creations makes a similar product called Salted Caramel, “Heavenly Morsels of Baked Corn With Natural* Ingredients You Can Pronounce”. I found them at Sam’s Club but their website says their also available at Kroger.
